Maia Koch – Welder

Maia Koch – Welder

Maia Koch is a prime example of the pride and devotion that tradespeople have in their careers. Born into a family of musicians, she was at first unsure of which career she wanted to pursue, and it was not until she enrolled in a Trades Discovery for Women program at BCIT that she realized that her calling was to become a Welder.

Through subsequent school programs, she continued to hone her technical skills, also developing time management abilities that have proven to be instrumental in the workplace. Maia also has aspirations to explore Metal Fabrication and HVAC, appreciating that many of the skills she’s learning now can be applied in other trades. At first, she felt intimidated as a woman entering trades but quickly learned that there were many women excelling in the industry. Maia’s experiences have driven her to inspire others, and she often participates in outreach programs, encouraging others, including youth, to explore careers within trades. ‘All education is good education’ is one of her favourite expressions, and she is living by it, making the most of her apprenticeships every day, as she pursues her dream of eventually owning her own custom fabrication business.
